PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT
A psychological evaluation and assessment is an in-depth assessment designed to assess how the brain functions across a wide range of areas-including memory, attention, language, reasoning, and emotional functioning.
It is often used when there are significant concerns about cognitive, academic, or behavioral changes, or when a diagnosis such as ADHD, learning disorder, autism, or a neurological condition needs to be confirmed or ruled out. This type of evaluation provides a holistic picture of brain-behavior relationships, identifying both strengths and vulnerabilities.
Psychological evaluations and assessments can at times include neuropsychological testing that help by examining how different parts of the brain are working and is comprised of an interview with a series of performance-based tests and questionnaires. The tests performed are typically paper and pencil tests, with some of the tests requiring verbal responses to confirm answers.
Testing is divided into three parts: a thorough clinical interview, psychological testing and neurocognitive testing. The interview involves a series of questions about symptoms and other relevant background information. We then test for personality and mental health disorders, as these disorders can contribute to impaired cognitive functioning and may imitate medical conditions. If these psychological disorders are present, it can then be determined as to how it may impact cognitive functioning. Finally, additional assessments will be utilized to measure the functioning of the brain which includes cognitive functioning, attention and executive functioning, memory, visual-spatial reasoning, language, and academic (if needed).
